Family Dynamics that affect Patient Care

Once a parent has made the decision to seek out chiropractic care for their autistic child it is imperative to understand that the child is not the only patient. While that child may be the recipient of care, it is necessary to understand that autism affects the entire family. The chiropractic physician must understand and be comfortable with assuming a 'social services' role to reduce stress, ease transitions, maintain optimal communication and to encourage compliance. An understanding of the stressors the family experiences such as financial burdens, single-parent situations, siblings and nutritional challenges is critical. Yesterday, you heard doctors discuss the definitions and urgency of an autism diagnosis. The chiropractic physician should come away from this presentation with an understanding of what it means to care for the whole family when only one part of that family is receiving hands-on care.
