Janet Cakir holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Geography from Radford University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her Ph.D. is in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management from North Carolina State University. Dr. Cakir has built an academic and professional career focused on the human/environment interface. Her doctoral research applied Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies to spatially and statistically model hiking trail degradation. Following her academic work, Dr. Cakir focused on ways people were connected to the environment and exposed to air pollution, especially Mercury, Particulate Matter, and Ozone.
